Tilia
Created by admin

Tilia is a genus of about 30 species of trees, native throughout most of the temperate Northern Hemisphere. In the British Isles they are commonly called lime trees, or lime bushes, although they are not closely related to the tree that produces the lime fruit. Other names include linden, and basswood for the North American species. The genus occurs in Europe and eastern North America, but the greatest species diversity is found in Asia. Under the Cronquist classification system, this genus was placed in the family Tiliaceae. Molecular phylogenetic studies indicated that the traditional family was polyphyletic and merged its components into four families of the order Malvales that are more closely related to other families in the order.

potential disturbances:
Tilia are mostly pest- and disease-free, but the following problems have been noted: aphids, scale insects, borers (such as the linden borer), Japanese beetles, and tent caterpillars. Trees in urban areas are also susceptible to pollution damage from vehicle fumes and salt.
