The leaves are 10โ€“20 cm (4โ€“8 in) long and 3โ€“8 cm (1.2โ€“3.1 in) wide, with a rounded base and a pointed tip. The upper side is dark green and hairy, while the underside is paler and mostly hairless. The leaves are arranged alternately on the twigs. The flowers are borne in catkins, with male and female flowers on separate trees. The male catkins are 2โ€“4 cm (0.79โ€“1.57 in) long and the female catkins 2โ€“3 cm (0.79โ€“1.18 in) long. The fruit is a small capsule containing numerous tiny seeds.
