Fraxinus excelsior is a deciduous Tree growing to 30 m (98ft) by 25 m (82ft) at a fast rate. Known also as the European Ash or Common Ash, this tree is widely planted for its timber. Its wood is tough, durable, lightweight and highly prized for tool handles. It is also often used for flooring and construction. It responds well to coppicing and produces a good crop of wood.
Fraxinus excelsior prefers well-drained fertile soil and sunny conditions. However, it also tolerates partial shade and different types of soil, including clay, loam and sandy soil. The right time to plant seeds is just as the last frost has passed.
